Different Types Of Acupuncturist

 

Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.)
This license designates a practitioner who has completed a 3-4 year acupuncture program, and maintains an active national certification from the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). The practitioner’s scope of practice is unlimited within Traditional Chinese Medicine.

*Ongoing continuing education courses are required to maintain active status by the NCCAOM

Professional Acupuncturist (DC, DDS, DPM)
This license is reserved for chiropractors, dentists, and podiatrists with 200 hours of training in acupuncture. And is dependent on a chiropractic, dental, or podiatric license. The practitioner’s scope of practice is limited to the practitioner’s respective license. (for example; chiropractors are limited to chiropractic care, dentists are limited to dental care, and podiatrists are limited to podiatry care).

*This license does not require any acupuncture continuing education.

NADA Detox Specialist (ADS)
This specialist attends a 75 hour course focusing on auricular (ear) acupuncture to treat addictions and works under the supervision of a medical doctor.

*This license does not require any acupuncture continuing education.

Medical Acupuncture (MD)
Medical doctors do not need any additional license to practice acupuncture. A 300 hour course is recommended, but some MD’s attend a 3-4 year acupuncture school.
